Learning Opportunities with Kansas Legal Services
The Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging and the Trinity Center have engaged Kansas Legal Services (the legal aid organization for Kansas) to provide a series of monthly public education sessions on the second Fridays of March, April, May and June from 10:30-12:00 at the Trinity Center. The programs are intended to create more confidence in participants to take charge of their personal business and safeguard themselves. The first session will be Friday, March 13 and the series of topics is expected to be:
March 13th: Putting the Power In Your Hands
Be in charge of who can act on your behalf. Learn the basics of Powers of Attorney documents in Kansas- what they can do for you, who can make them, and how they serve a different purpose from Advance Directives and other documents. Your rights as a medical patient will also be discussed.
April 10th: Don’t Leave a Mess - Make a Simple Plan for After You’re Gone
Be thoughtful about those who will have to administer the distribution of your personal business and belongings (your “estate”) when you are not able to, or after death. Learn about the options you have for how to set it up as you desire.
May 8th: You CAN Protect Yourself From Scams
This presentation will guide you through several types of scams and how to recognize them so you will be able to avoid being taken advantage of, as well as protect your personal data and finances.
June 12th: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
There are many challenges when taking on the full-time caregiving responsibility of grandchildren. This presentation will address common legal issues such as authority to act on a minor’s behalf in school, medical decisions, or for their welfare.
Refreshments will be served and there will be ample time for your personal questions for the presenters. Though the sessions are targeted at senior adults, all are welcome! For more information please text or call the Trinity Center at 785-288-9345.
